Coming off the first three chapters of 1 Samuel last week, we’ll continue our journey into Samuel. We’ll usher in a new era in Israel: the era of the Kingdom. Spoiler alert: like all things in the Bible that get off to a good start, it comes crashing down pretty quickly. Let’s just call it a false start.

I’m not gonna lie – this forecast took a while because it’s real turbulent and I nearly crash-landed this thing. Let’s stick with it even when it’s bumpy. It makes the good news even sweeter if we’ve taken a hard look at the evil.

Moses concludes his 33 chapter sermon, blesses Israel, and goes up to Mt. Pisgah to be gathered to his fathers. (And buried by the Lord – how cool is that?!) Israel mourns for thirty days and then prepares to enter the Land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. What a moment for the people! All the anticipation in the wilderness has led to this moment – let’s hope they remember God’s faithfulness and walk in obedience to his word!

Israel has come from the wilderness to the edge of the Promised Land. Moses has led well, but because he stole the glory of the Lord by saying he could bring water from the rock, he is not permitted to enter the Promised Land. So, here they all stand on the edge of the Jordan River … waiting for Moses to die so that they can possess the land. But before Moses is “gathered to his fathers,” he gives one last sermon – and that’s the book of Deuteronomy. Here’s a quick outline of the book to help you locate yourself as we read this week:
- Looking backward (chs. 1-3)
- Encouragement to covenant faithfulness (chs. 4-11)
- Covenant rules stipulations (chs. 12-26)
- Blessings and Curses, Covenant renewal (chs. 27-30)
- Looking forward (chs. 31-34)
