I think Numbers is one of the most underrated books. Once you get past the first few chapters, several significant events create tiny ripples that form tidal waves of judgment and redemption throughout the rest of the Bible. A few passages we’ll read about this week are picked up in the New Testament and used as exhortations to faithful obedience.

We’re finishing up our time at Mount Sinai this week and preparing to head out for the Promised Land! All looks good for now, but cue the “Are we there, yet?” loop. The golden calf incident is behind us and the Lord will still go up in the midst of the people because his presence is what makes them distinct. We’re left with an amazing truth at the end of this week as the people of Israel “bear Yahweh’s name” into their new land. What a privilege and a responsibility!

Weekly Bible Reading Forecast: Week Seven

Early last week, we heard the Lord God tell Moses what was going to happen and how the tabernacle was going to be built. Towards the end of last week, we read about how Bezalel and Oholiab accomplished all the work with the Spirit’s help. In this week’s reading, they finish the last few items for the tabernacle, bring all the pieces together, and see the Lord bless it with his presence. All that’s left is to figure out what’s going to happen inside the tabernacle. That’s what the majority of our reading is about over the next week and a half through Leviticus (It’s only a week and a half – we can do it!).

We’re barely out of the first month of the year and we’ve already read two whole books! Way to go! Let’s keep at it, trusting that by engaging the Word of God, we will be transformed by the Spirit into the image of Christ. As John Newton says, “A Christian is not of hasty growth, like a mushroom, but rather like the oak, the progress of which is hardly perceptible but in time becomes a deep-rooted tree.” Persistent faithfulness in the small, but significant things will produce growth if we do not lose heart!
