We finish out with a few letter from John, a few from Peter, one from Jude, and a final vision given to John from Jesus himself. There is a consistent theme of finishing well and remaining faithful in the face of false teachers and love of the world. I can’t think of a more fitting exhortation for us than a call to perseverance and faithfulness as we conclude this year and look toward a new year. May 2022 be a year of deeper commitment and whole-hearted discipleship to Jesus. Further up and deeper in – now and forever.

**Note: I’ve modified the Tuesday and Wednesday readings to fit them into seven days (because there were actually 8 readings on this week’s lineup).**

This week, we’re reading five whole books of the New Testament. I think you’ll appreciate this practice because it will help you get a sense of the argument of the whole book in one sitting. One common trend in these books is the relentless focus on Jesus and repeated exhortation toward faithfulness. These two aspects remain vital aspects of Christian encouragement today.

This week, we continue our journey with Paul. He’ll conclude Romans, travel back to Israel, meet some persecution, undergo trial, and land under house-arrest in Rome. All the while, he’s writing letters and building relationships so that the gospel may speed along to the ends of the earth.

We’re in the middle of Paul’s letters to the churches this week. We’ll hear all about the task given to ministers of the gospel. We’ll see how stern words of rebuke lead to godly grief and repentance. We’ll hear Paul’s fullest explanation of the gospel to the church at Rome. Hopefully through it all – we’ll be in awe of the person and work of Christ and inspired to move out into the world loving and serving our neighbor because of our overflowing gratitude for the freedom we have in the gospel.

We’re following Paul this week on his second and third missionary journeys. It’s a pretty rough start in Acts 17, but he recovers and we’ll move on to hear Paul’s pastoral advice and encouragement of these new believers in his letters. Some of the churches are growing and learning. Others are having struggles (here’s looking at you, Corinth). All in all, it’s an interesting week of reading. Pay attention to how Paul works out his pastoral advice through the lens of the cross and resurrection.

This week, we’re reading about how the gospel crosses social, racial, and ethnic boundaries. Although it doesn’t come easily or without conflict and hurt, the grace of Jesus is greater than any barrier and worth bearing one another’s burdens.

This week closes out the gospel of John and moves us into Acts as the gospel begins to spread throughout Jerusalem and (because of persecution) into Judea and Samaria.

Our time this week will take us through the first half of John’s gospel. It is the most unique of the four gospels and is written specifically so that people may believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that by believing they may have life in his name. Pay attention to each of these themes as you read: belief, Christ, Son of God, eternal life, and discipleship.

We conclude the second half of Luke’s gospel this week and read the first two chapters of John’s gospel. Keep reading Luke with an eye toward (1) gaining certainty about what we have been taught and (2) seeing how the nations are being welcomed into the kingdom of God.

This week we move from Matthew’s gospel into Luke’s gospel. You may remember we said Matthew’s focus was on showing Jewish believers how Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises and the teacher of a new righteousness. Luke, on the other hand, makes an important emphasis on how the nations are being welcomed into the story of salvation. And he does so through an orderly account of the events surrounding the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus so that his audience (a man named Theophilus) would have certainty concerning the things he’d been taught.
