We’re spending one more week with David and his Mighty Men before we make the royal transition to Solomon. We’ll see David’s final acts as King – both good and bad – and hear his reflections in Psalms. I’m struck by David’s persistent God-centered focus and his reverent awe of the Lord’s splendor. At the beginning of his reign, Solomon gets it, too: “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” Indeed. The church itself is now God’s building – built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets (Eph. 2:19-20).

This week, we’re slowing down the pace a bit to focus in on the first events David does after he is established as king by the twelve tribes. To this point, our Bible reading has mainly moved right through the biblical order of books – but this week we’ll begin jumping around between Psalms and Chronicles (soon to include Samuel and Kings, too). Unlike Samuel (the prophetic account of Israel’s Kings) or Kings (the “royal account” of Israel’s Kings), Chronicles is the “historical account.” You’ll get a grittier picture of the Kings and an assessment of their actions based upon their faithfulness to the covenant. Pay attention to those differences as we read over the next few weeks.

The winds of renewal will blow in toward the end of this week, but the dark clouds of trouble will linger for the first half. Let’s not speed through the darkness because it’s there that the Lord so often meets us. It was true for David, and I suspect it remains true for many of us today. But on the other side – yes, even of this week - there’s beauty worth beholding.

Coming off the first three chapters of 1 Samuel last week, we’ll continue our journey into Samuel. We’ll usher in a new era in Israel: the era of the Kingdom. Spoiler alert: like all things in the Bible that get off to a good start, it comes crashing down pretty quickly. Let’s just call it a false start.

I’m not gonna lie – this forecast took a while because it’s real turbulent and I nearly crash-landed this thing. Let’s stick with it even when it’s bumpy. It makes the good news even sweeter if we’ve taken a hard look at the evil.
